When it comes to the reduction of chemical losses and emissions as well as an optimized product storage, it is vitally important to adhere to a low humidity level during the production in the steel industry. An example is the operation of a pickling plant handling chemicals to treat the steel with. Already during the production of the steel products certain humidity values must not be exceeded so as not to compromise the process and in order to protect the partly sensitive machines against the harmful moisture.
Ideal storage conditions
A low humidity level is also indispensable when storing steel products. Otherwise there is a risk of oxidation and corrosion at the cold surfaces where moisture accumulates, which at worst even renders the products unusable. Steel begins to corrode at a relative humidity of about 50 per cent. If the relative humidity exceeds 50 per cent, the oxidation rate is up to 2000 times higher than with a low humidity level. So, for one thing, you are to avoid the usage of water near storage facilities, and for another, to ensure an active an above all effective dehumidification. This not only serves to maintain the high quality of the metal products, but also to reduce the amount of rejects.
Protecting sensitive equipment and machinery
Besides the stored steel products other equipment such as compressors, turbines and gas turbine filters should also be protected against moisture and consequently corrosion. An inappropriate humidity value affects them badly, for machines love dry air. Unlike humankind machines and production facilities prefer extremely dry air. For that is the only way to avoid the problematic corrosion.
