The challenge at sea: Condensation water and corrosion
Dehumidification in offshore wind turbines increases the operating time
It is always humid on the high seas – after all, the humidity level may reach up to 100 percent. Moreover, temperatures drop significantly at night, which leads to condensation on surfaces and in interior spaces. With a sophisticated dehumidification concept using high-performance units from Trotec, consequential damages are prevented.
Corrosion of metal parts in the nacelle of a wind turbine or in the tower itself as well as electrical failure are among the most typical humidity damages in offshore surroundings. They cause substantial additional costs as they increase the expense for maintenance and repair and may lead to operational downtimes. Plus, they reduce the turbine's life. In this case, strategically positioned dehumidifiers, heating devices and fans provide a remedy and protection from condensation water and rust.
Little air exchange and extreme cooling
The particular challenge in the conception of the dehumidification installation is that the turbine is closed and thus there is only little exchange of air. Fans are able to increase the air circulation. Furthermore, temperatures often drop below the dew point due to the extreme cooling at night or due to weather changes. As a result, condensation water forms on the cold outer wall in the tower or in the nacelle. Without targeted dehumidification, it will drip down onto plant components sooner or later. This may result in corrosion of plant components and short-circuits in switching mechanisms. Moreover, puddles form on the floor which present a risk of accident for the maintenance staff. This can be prevented: With suitable dehumidification technology from Trotec, condensation water will not even start to form.
Dry room climate reduces maintenance costs
Power plant operators can choose between several high-performance device series from Trotec for dehumidification in wind turbines – by the way, the devices have been developed and produced in Germany and offer you reliable quality "Made in Germany". For fighting humid sea air, we particularly recommend using the stationary desiccant dehumidifiers of the TTR series. Depending on the size of the turbine and the on-site conditions, the dehumidification concept may be complemented by electric heaters and fans, which prevent the formation of condensation and corrosion in a selective way. Thanks to the targeted internal air circulation, the inner sides of the outer walls are kept dry and moisture cannot even start to accumulate. The remote monitoring of the humidity level can be implemented reliably with our DL200 data loggers.
Safe planning with the Trotec industrial services team
The industrial services team ensures the correct planning and realization of a safe dehumidification concept: First of all, you will support our experts in calculating the climate parameters and planning the installation. Afterwards, before installing stationary dryers or dehumidifiers, we will test the functionality of the dehumidification concept with the help of mobile devices of the same type. Humidity under control? Only then will the permanent solution be installed.
Upon request, we will readily produce tailor-made desiccant dehumidifiers as special models “made in Germany” perfectly geared to your needs, e.g.:
- TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers with hygienic design
- TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers for PWIS-free dry air
- TTR industrial desiccant dehumidifiers with extremely low dew point
Makes use of the possibility of having special models with tailored components for your individual needs planned, designed and manufactured in close consultation with our specialists.
