Preventing icing in the food production

The application of industrial dryers in lyophilisation tunnels and cold stores saves costs

The food industry is facing a paradox: On the one hand, turning water into ice is the raison d'être of lyophilisation tunnels and cold stores. On the other hand, icing is a major problem in this process. Ice, hoarfrost and fog in the cooled production infrastructure lead to costly accidents and malfunctions right up to production losses. Setting up additional industrial dryers prevents icing by dehumidifying the air.

In the food production with deep-freeze sections, even in case of well-equipped air locks, it cannot be completely avoided that humid air flows into dry air zones. Due to the sub-zero temperatures prevailing there, the moisture first precipitates in form of condensate on walls, ceiling, floor, products and technology and then freezes. The problems caused by this icing are many and varied:

  • Products in cold storage can rime, hence rendering the bar codes illegible.
  • Icing on the floor of loading zones and entrance areas lead to slip hazards and to accidents due to skidding fork lifts.
  • Icicles or chunks of ice falling from the ceiling could injure employees.
  • The transparent strip curtains mist up, thus obstructing the view to the room behind.
  • Icing accumulates on the technical equipment of the refrigeration system and reduces the performance.
  • The necessity of frequently having to defrost and clean the production machines and the parts of the cooling technology leads to expensive production stops.

The solution comes in form of TTR industrial dryers with desiccant technology

Often the precautionary measures of cold store system manufacturers are not sufficient for preventing icing by means of dehumidification. In order to ensure humidity control, an additional system of industrial dryers and measurement technology is required. This system can be subsequently installed without difficulty and pays off quickly: Less production losses, saving accident costs and immaculate goods turn to account. Suited for the application in cold stores and lyophilisation tunnels are desiccant dehumidifiers, for unlike condensation dryers they ensure reliable dehumidification even at low temperatures in the minus range.

Mobile, stationary or as stainless steel version – industrial dryers for frozen storage

The dryers of the TTR series are just the thing to be used in cold stores and freezing tunnels. Depending on the required capacity, the Trotec Group offers both mobile and stationary desiccant dehumidifiers. The mobile TTR devices are also available as stainless steel versions for hygiene-sensitive areas in the food production. All industrial dryers of the TTR series are equipped with reliable silica gel sorption rotors in washable and mechanically high-tensile finish. Process and regeneration air are channelled in different ways depending on the construction: based on the TTR Trisorp Mono, TTR Trisorp Dual or TTR Bisorp Mono principle.

Ideal for sub-zero temperatures: climate measuring device with dew point alarm signal generator

State-of-the-art industrial data loggers like the DL200H for monitoring environmental factors and the multifunctional measuring device T260 complete the dehumidification system. The precision climate measuring device T260 was designed for measuring air and dew point temperatures or for determining the relative, absolute and specific humidity. Moreover, it impresses with an integrated laser pyrometer incl. dew point alarm signal generator. With this measuring technology you'll retain control over the humidity level inside lyophilisation tunnels and cold stores.

Further solutions

Make use of our best practice industrial services

Since every industrial undertaking has characteristic process flows, installations and facilities, every air treatment solution demands case-specific device configurations. All in all, the combined effects of air currents, humidity conditions and temperature fluctuations are often hard to calculate on a purely theoretical basis, e.g. in airlock areas or on conveying paths. The consequence: Unnecessary additional costs due to an overestimated demand or – even worse – solutions not working sufficiently in real life.
