Energy consumption measuring device BX50 MID

Tamper-proof solution for the professional commercial determination of the energy consumption for billing purposes

Billable power consumption measurement made easy

The BX50 MID is probably the most compact ready-to-connect energy consumption measuring instrument with MID-compliance* on the market and therefore is the ideal solution for many craftsmen or service companies, which, for billing purposes, have to determine the amount of energy consumed at the customer's site.

For tasks of this kind it is not always practical to directly provide a largely dimensioned, MID-compliant* multiple socket outlet, especially if perhaps only one electricity consumer is used.

But the use of conventional energy cost measuring devices for home use without MID-compliance* for the commercial measurement of energy consumption for billing purposes is not permissible. The BX50 MID, which has been specifically designed for this purpose closes this gap in a cost-effective fashion:

The MID-compliant* energy consumption measuring device can be easily plugged between the electrical appliance and a normal household safety socket (230 V/AC) and does not involve any further installation effort. Only when operating the BX50 MID on construction or installation sites at a socket of the building's wiring with unknown protective measures, a BGI-608-compliant plug adapter must be used.

BX50 MID - Stiftung Warentest

Stiftung Warentest tested the BX50 MID and awarded it the quality rating GOOD

In November 2022 Stiftung Warentest tested 15 electricity meters - nine classic models with display and six smart sockets with electricity measuring function. The energy cost measuring device BX50 MID from Trotec was rated overall with the quality rating GOOD (2.4) in the test.

Reliable determination of the consumption – simple handling

When you use the BX50 MID you won't encounter any complicated combinations of input keys to be pressed or any confusing keypads. The measuring device has been designed for a quick, uncomplicated use – one menu button provides access to all display functions.

The backlighted display optionally indicates watts, volts, amperes, the active power, power factor (cos φ), kWh or frequency. Whereas the overall consumption meter cannot be tampered with due to legal specifications, the BX50 MID is additionally provided with a resettable daily consumption meter.

The BX50 MID is an ideal solution for commercial energy consumption measurements for billing purposes, however, of course it can also be used as a qualified measuring instrument at home if you wish to professionally expose costly power guzzlers.

Proper energy billing for existing equipment without meters?

You're still using electrical appliances without MID-compliant energy consumption meters the current consumption of which you have to report to insurance companies? Then the BX50 MID is the perfect solution. Just install it between the device and a fixed socket – done!

Perfectly equipped for professional requirements

With the MID compliance*of the BX50 MID tested in accordance with EN50470-1/3 it is ensured that this measuring device can be properly used for the commercial determination of the energy consumption for billing purposes.

In addition to the MID-compliance* in some EU countries, however, further requirements with regard to such measuring instruments apply, like for example in Germany. Here, the Weights and Measures Act (MessEG) additionally requires the guarantee that neither further electricity consumers are connected during the period of use nor that they can be replaced by other consumers.

Therefore the BX50 MID is the only energy consumption measuring instrument in its class on the market, which comes equipped with two integrated sealing slots. This utility model-protected solution enables users to properly safeguard the plug installation, for example by means of consecutively numbered pull-up seals, which are optionally available as accessories. The imprinted identification number of each seal is additionally represented as a universal barcode which can be easily scanned for purposes of documentation.

The ideal supplement for existing devices without MID-compliant meters

Many restoration companies, drying service providers or craftsmen are still using numerous electrical appliances that are not provided with an MID-compliant energy consumption meter. This meter, however, is mandatory for determining the electricity consumption for commercial billing purposes. For such cases we have developed the BX50 MID – easy use, proper calculation of consumptions!

The BX50 MID is also ideally suited for precise feed-in calculations for balcony power plants

Having your own photovoltaic system on your balcony is becoming increasingly popular. In Germany, balcony power plants with an output of up to 800 watts can now be connected to the grid in a pleasantly unbureaucratic manner and are offered as ready-to-plug-in solar systems for little money as a complete assembly.

In principle, a feed-in tariff is also possible, but there are high technical hurdles here, firstly because a special bidirectional electricity meter is required and would probably be provided for a fee, and secondly because the subsidised kWh price is very low.

Consume your own electricity, save grid electricity and calculate the savings reliably

Most users will primarily use the electricity they generate themselves in order to reduce their electricity costs. In this case, it is particularly important to be able to reliably record the exact amount of self-generated electricity in order to calculate and amortize the system, so that you know how much solar power your own plug-in PV system generates in total.

The solution is a bidirectional energy meter that can measure both consumed and generated electricity. According to search queries, there seems to be no shortage of these, but if you want to make a precise and reliable calculation, there is no getting around a calibrated and accurate measuring device.

BX50 MID: Ideally suited for precise feed-in calculation of balcony power plants
The BX50 MID can measure and display both the current consumed and the current generated

Officially calibrated, measuring bidirectionally, ideal for precise feed-in calculation of plug-in PV systems

The current model of our BX50 MID energy meter is ideally suited for such feed-in measurements. Unlike many other measuring devices, the BX50 MID, which is manufactured with IP54 protection, is officially calibrated in accordance with the MID declaration of conformity and is also approved for commercial energy consumption measurement for billing purposes.

Tamper-proof total consumption meter for reliable calculation of savings and amortization

A practical function for precise long-term amortization calculation of your system is the special memory management of the BX50 MID: If the meter is used specifically for continuous measurement of a mini PV installation, the daily meter can be reset to zero if required - however, the total meter cannot be manipulated in accordance with legal requirements and can therefore be optimally used for error-free total calculation of the electricity generated by your balcony power plant.

* What does MID-compliant mean?

MID-compliant counters correspond to the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) that defines the requirements for active power meters used for billing purposes. This for example also applies to the energy consumption measuring for recharging to insurance companies or customers. The former initial factory calibration is now replaced by the MID compliance, however, the devices have to be re-calibrated after a defined period of time – for instance after 8 years in case of electronic counters in Germany.

A few practical benefits:

  • Professional measuring device for quickly and easily recording the energy requirement of electric consumers
  • MID-compliance – approved for the commercial determination of the energy consumption for billing purposes
  • Sealing slots for safeguarding the plugs in compliance with the Weights and Measures Act (MessEG)
  • Tamper-proof total consumption meter
  • Resettable daily consumption meter
  • Socket outlet with spring-loaded flap lid to provide protection against pollution when it is not used
  • Practice-optimized German industrial design – utility model-protected
