Security on the rails: evacuation exercises in trains
Using a fog and flue gas simulator, it is possible to simulate a fire on a train – and to train the personnel for an emergency
Whether a faulty air conditioning system, a damaged engine or a burning waste bin: usually, the cause for smoke development on a train is only identified after completion of the fire-fighting operation. Before that, it is important for the on-board staff to keep calm and evacuate the passengers. The personnel is prepared for the worst case during fire exercises. During such an exercise, the fog and flue gas simulator FS200 from Trotec is often used. It guarantees a constant and, of course, harmless smoke production.
When dense smoke spreads inside a narrow train compartment or a large wagon, panic breaks out. Normally, the passengers neither know the cause for the smoke, nor how great the impending danger is. The only solution: the passengers must rely on the staff in an emergency as the staff know what to do. After all, it is important to keep calm, particularly if the fire breaks out during the train journey. The train driver first has to stop the train so that the passengers can be evacuated. The staff successively check the compartments, lavatories and dining cars to be able to evacuate everyone as quickly as possible.
Prepared for emergencies
To be able to react calmly and confidently in such an emergency, the crew should be prepared for such situations. During evacuation exercises, they specifically learn how to proceed in case of unknown smoke development inside a train and how to ensure safety of the passengers. In particular, it should be taken into account that in case of a fire in a train, the wagons are quickly covered in dense smoke. It is essential to provide breathing protection and keep orientation in order to get the passengers into fresh air as quickly as possible.
The personnel train such emergencies under conditions which are as realistic as possible. This means that at least one wagon must be provided and filled with dense smoke. In next to no time, the fog and flue gas simulator FS200 from Trotec creates visibility conditions identical to those prevailing during a fire in a narrow space.
Reliable operation
Transporting the fog and flue gas simulator and putting it into operation are very simple tasks. Thanks to its compact dimensions and its light weight, the compact power pack can be installed in a wagon without difficulty. With only a few steps the canister holder can be unlocked and folded out and the canister with the fog fluid can be applied. The extremely powerful turbine and the fluid pump of the FS200 can be set as needed. Handy: These adjustments can be made steplessly so that the density of the artificial fog can be adapted to the individual operating conditions. The intelligent power coupling of turbine, heating and pump makes sure that the smoke does not vanish during an evacuation exercise on the train. This way, the dense fog flow can be produced evenly without a need for postheating.
Applying the fog and flue gas simulator FS200 for evacuation exercises allows you to fully concentrate on the course of events. Short set-up times and a quick preparation of the wagon without additional supervision of the equipment are guaranteed.
