Hazards lurking in a garage:
What your car ought to be protected from.
Not the ravages of time chip away at classic cars: It is mother nature. Naturally your car is parked in a garage – but is it really safe there? Here you can find out which hazards might be lurking in a garage.
SUMMER
In the summer your car enjoys a warm and dry climate? Far from it! Especially in the summertime the humidity level is extremely high. Average humidity values of 95% are not uncommon in Germany. We perceive this kind of weather as muggy, our cars have to face worse: Already from a relative humidity of 60% metal begins to corrode, from 70% there is an ideal breeding ground for mould.

WINTER
In the winter, too, humidity constitutes the vehicle's number one enemy: Cold air absorbs less humidity than warm air. Therefore, moisture collects on surfaces – particularly on cold metal surfaces. There it finds its way into the smallest nooks and openings, which can lead to corrosion. The vehicle's interior also suffers from sharp frost: Synthetics and leather can become porous.

CORROSION
Rust is tricky and insidious. It chiefly forms in damp surroundings. At first, it doesn't appear at clearly visible spots but rather in niches, nooks and crannies or else it finds a secluded location underneath the bonnet. This is not only unaesthetic to look at but also entails functional implications. Everyone whose heart beats with the stroke of the engine is therefore heartbroken by thinking of corrosion and rust.

MILDEW & MOULD
A car truly consists of more than just metal and plastics. Everything which at some point was remotely alive, let's say cotton or leather, is covered again in damp conditions: Particularly by mould, which – depending on the room's humidity, the concentration of mould spores in the room air and temperatures – thrives sumptuously.

ODOURS
Various scents and smells can emerge from a car in cold and wet conditions. Maybe you even know the problem from experience: Even negligible amounts of microorganisms contained in dust, carried inside by shoes and clothing, can proliferate at a breathtaking pace, form proper colonies and cause unpleasant smells.
Countermeasures: Odour neutralisation / ionisation – Is your garage too dry, too humid, too cold, too warm? Find out for yourselves...
ROT
Rot is an explosive issue, especially when dealing with vintage cars, whose construction contains wooden parts, and in case of modern classics, when the interior has been refined with timber. Because wood is also susceptible to humidity and microorganisms. It absorbs these natural enemies in an almost appreciative manner and in doing so limits the aesthetics or even functioning – depending on the model.

POROSITY
It is not only humidity that can damage vintage cars and modern classics, but dryness, too. Leather and rubber can become porous, when stored in a too dry environment. This room climate issue can implicate expensive consequences.
